In this 3-hour workshop at my studio in NE Portland, we’ll explore a collection of found treasures and exercise our creative muscles by asking “what else could this be?” Pretty soon hose nozzles become bird beaks and washers make obvious eyes… or open mouths or hair curls. You get the idea. Faces and figures (people or animal shapes) are a starting point, but you can go in any direction you choose.

We’ll secure our creations with wire, nails, acrylic gel medium, and other low-tech, no-heat fasteners (no soldering or welding, and I’m not a fan of hot glue because it doesn’t last very long).

Depending on the materials you choose, your creation can become yard art or indoor decor. You’ll enjoy exploring where the materials take you, and remember: there are no wrong answers when you’re working with cast-offs. It’s about seeing new possibilities in old things, which is a great skill to develop as we head into an increasingly wobbly future. Fresh ways of looking at what’s always been there. Novel takes on what others might regard as, well, a pile of junk, or maybe a broken system.

All materials provided. You may also bring some personal do-dads or memorabilia to use in your art piece.
