As a community mural artist for many years, working mostly in mosaic, I’ve led lots of workdays with large groups of volunteers. We mix up big batches of tile adhesive (mortar), and on other days, big batches of grout. I hate wasting stuff, so when faced with left-overs of these soon-to-harden-if-not-used-quickly mixtures, I came up with the whimsical pairing you see here: found hardware embedded in a slathering of the cementy compound.

I love how it makes forgotten bits of rusty cast-offs “shine” at center stage.

This one is crafted on the back of a 13” x 4” (31 x 10 cm) piece of floor tile that was manufactured to look like wood grain. The hardware spellS out “PEACE.” I gave it a stain-like coat of turquoise acrylic paint just for fun.
