Sermon on the Mat
I think of Keyonda as a “yoga preacher.” A minister of the body. A pastor of souls with leggings and bare feet as vestments. When I leave her class I feel like I’ve been to church, but only in the best way.
So I shouldn’t have been surprised to learn that she’d once been an ordained minister. As a PK myself (I’m a pastor’s kid, plus a pastor’s grandkid and a pastor’s aunt) with a touchy relationship to Church, we had a lot to talk about. Plus it turns out we both used to teach elementary school, so there you go.
Welcome to this lively conversation about spirituality and culture, rhythms and numbing, connection and the perils of losing it. If you’re not into yoga and don’t get what all the fuss is about, we share your suspicion of the fuss. We’re not drawn to $100 yoga pants or impossible Instagram poses, either.
I also reveal my new morning routine (as of mid-July) which has shifted me out of squishy listlessness into an appreciation for more than just the rising sun. If you ever find yourself thinking “people never change,” well, take it from this lifelong night owl — people can.
Keyonda’s spirit is infectious, so come right on in and join us. Might I suggest getting down on the floor to stretch while you listen?! 🥰
