Doodling as Self-Care

  • All Hands Art Studio 5120 NE 24th Ave Portland United States (map)

First, all art-making is self-care. I just want to be clear about that.

Second, if you’re already a doodler, then Yay! Take a moment to celebrate your ability to communicate and self-soothe through your pen, whenever, wherever.

If you’re NOT a doodler, like I wasn’t until about four years ago when I was feeling so bugged and deficient and in awe of people who could just let designs spill out of their fingers, that I watched an online class about doodling… well, then, you’re missing out. And I feel like it’s my duty to welcome and initiate you into the wide, beautiful, liberating, and deeply personal world of doodling!

It’s become my (almost) daily art practice for the past four-ish years for many reasons, including:
1) The materials are simple — just pen and paper.
2) It’s not messy.
3) It’s portable.
4) The possibilities are endless.
5) It’s an easy and safe way to confront my inner critic daily, and learn to push past it.
6) When combined with words and phrases, it uses both sides of my brain in a way that is conducive to problem solving and “aha” discoveries.
7) I can do it for 5 minutes or three hours, depending on my mood and schedule.

I love doodling so much that I made a few YouTube videos about it. Here’s one to start with.

Anyway, in this class I’ll show you simple ways that I unlock my creative juices on paper, and— oh yeah, tackle my thorniest personal issues while I’m at it. Or just chill out. Or process the news. Or brainstorm new classes I want to teach. Or… Or… Or… You get the idea.
