Creating Space

This year I’m posting three times per month: WORDS on the 3rd, PICTURES on the 13th, and SOUND on the 23rd. The SOUND posts have become a podcast, and this is Episode 4. You’ll find all episodes here, and you can subscribe here.

“Well, people are giving me money for this, and I don’t really have time for anything else, so I guess I’m a professional artist!” - Brenna McDonald, co-founder of Espacio Flamenco

This story, which starts in the middle and gets to the beginning around minute 30 (why be linear?), describes how flamenco dance and guitar captured a twelve-year-old’s imagination and hasn’t let go. When you follow your curiosity one step at a time (that’s a dance pun), you may find yourself in surprising situations, like the one Brenna notes above. Then you have to figure out how to run a business! And what to name it.

You don’t need to be a dancer or musician to listen in. If you get nervous speaking in front of groups, struggle with body judgment, or are curious about selfishness as a life strategy, this conversation is for you. Revolutionary ideas included at no extra cost, and there’s space — espacio — for all.

Without further ado, let me introduce you to my beloved dance teacher, Brenna.

Interview with Brenna McDonald 5/23/20 Pam Consear of AllHandsArt.com

P.S. I enjoyed interviewing Brenna so much that I did it twice. 😉 Then I had 2.5 hours of audio to whittle down into a podcast-sized “sound collage” of sorts. If any connections or segues are jarring, that’s on me. Besides being a beginning flamenco dancer, I’m a beginning audio editor, but as with any creative endeavor, I believe in sharing imperfect work.
