Here’s what’s on All Hands Art’s calendar in the next few weeks. These scheduled make-shops and mural volunteer opportunities are open to the public.
** Please note that I’ll be moving to Portland, Oregon in June 2017! I’d love to connect with artists and art-enthusiasts in that area, so feel free to get in touch. Also, because of the upcoming move, I have fewer events going on over the next few months. I’m sure you understand.
Doodling. No Fooling!
Get your doodle on in this fun and gently-guided Make-shop. Whether you’re a seasoned doodler or a fearful newbie, we’ll get your squiggles flowing in no time.
I’ve become somewhat of a doodling evangelist since I broke through my mental doodle blocks about 2 years ago. Wondering what’s so great about it? Check out this recent blog post, and these videos I made on the subject.
Then come doodle with me! We’ll do some exercises to get the ideas flowing, and I’ll demonstrate several different ways to start a doodle. You’ll have plenty of time to experiment with materials and styles—or to get more instruction and support, as needed.
Doodling has become my go-to daily art practice since 2015. It combines the benefits of journaling with right-brain creative mark-making. So much good spills out on the paper! The possibilities are endless, and endlessly liberating.
Mosaic Mural Volunteer Opportunities — Learn on the Job
When you volunteer on an All Hands Art mural project, you’ll learn mosaic techniques (for free!) while contributing something beautiful to the community. New projects are added throughout the year, so check back regularly.
Spring 2017: Bella Vista School, 1025 E 28th St, Oakland (between 10th and 11th Avenues)
Our mission: To replace about 40 feet of mosaic on a low retaining wall, and get it looking like new again. (DONE! Now we just need to grout it. See info below.)
Back story: This mural was created in 2010 with the help of about 80 students and community members. In 2012 a car crashed into it, jarring a large section of the mosaic work away from the wall. Over time, more than half of the mosaic has fallen away due to the car’s impact. Yikes! It’s kind of an eyesore now.
We’ll be reinstalling new little tile pieces during March and April, and grouting it (the final step!) on May 6, 2017.
Mural Workday Schedule
Saturday, May 6th, 10:00 – 2:00 pm; grouting/finishing/celebrating!
What to bring/wear: Wear comfortable clothes for crouching and getting dirty.
Bring sunscreen, a hat, water bottle, and snacks as needed.
Optional: Bring a low stool or pad to sit and kneel on. I’ll provide several as well.
Your friends and family members are always welcome! (Suitable for age 10 and up.)

I’ve got mosaic projects starting up at Oakland Technical High School in early May, and at Oakland International High School in late May/early June.
Email me at firstname.lastname@example.org if you’d like to be added to my “potential mural volunteers” email list. That’s the best way to hear about upcoming mural workdays and opportunities.
